SIA Gears Up For Government Summit

May 17, 2007 2:40 PM

This year's Security Industry Association (SIA) Government Summit, which takes place on June 11-13 at the Hilton Embassy Row hotel in Washington, D.C., is designed to keep participants up-to-date on policies driving federal procurement decisions and to create a strong, unified industry voice on Capitol Hill. At the Summit, industry leaders and government end-users will hear from the nation's leading policy experts on issues impacting the GSA Schedules Program, TWIC implementation, "earmarking" federal funds for physical security projects, and the SAFETY Act designation process.

Some highlights include:

  • A speaker lineup including: Hon. Andrew Card, former secretary of transportation and White House chief of staff; Hon. Lurita Doan, GSA administrator; Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.), chairman of the House Science Committee; Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Committee; and James Powers, Homeland Security advisor to Gov. Ed Rendell (D-Pa).

  • Sessions on appropriations, standards and procurement, and balancing technological innovation and privacy.

  • Joint sessions with government end users. In addition, government end users have the opportunity to participate in vendor-neutral programming focused on migrating/or updating legacy security systems and conducting a risk assessment and vulnerability analysis.

Participants will also be able to make their voice heard to elected officials with a trip to Capitol Hill. Tuesday afternoon is "Hill Day," which is made in order to encourage greater Congressional support for the Port Security Grant Program and cooperative purchasing for GSA Schedule 84.

From Monday's Welcome Reception on the rooftop of the Hilton Embassy Row to Wednesday night's policy dinner featuring Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), the Government Summit offers multiple networking opportunities.

Last year's Government Summit was a success says Robert Hile, vice president Business Development, Adesta, Omaha, Neb. And he is also excited about this year's conference. "In my three years of being associated with the SIA summit, this year features the best session material and the highest caliber speakers we have ever had."

The Security Industry Association has reserved a block of hotel rooms at the Hilton Embassy Row hotel where all Summit events will take place.
