Boeing wins SBInet contract

Sep 21, 2006 3:36 PM

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded Boeing Co. a contract to implement SBInet along the United States northern and southern borders.
The goal of the SBInet program -- a component of the Secure Border Initiative (SBI) plan assigned to Customs and Border Protection -- is to integrate personnel, infrastructure, technologies and rapid-response capability for border security.
SBInet aims to combine existing investments and current security initiatives with new technologies. While SBI focuses more on the comprehensive strategy of border control and immigration enforcement, SBInet's need to integrate technology into border enforcement applies directly to the security industry.
(see govtsecurity.com/mag/opportunity_borders/ for more on SBI and the SBInet plans.)
SBInet will provide frontline personnel advantages in securing the nation's land borders by fielding the most effective mix of current and next generation technology, infrastructure, staffing, and response platforms, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says. "This strategic partnership allows the department to exploit private sector ingenuity and expertise to quickly secure our nation's borders," Chertoff said in a statement.
The SBInet solution will be deployed using a Homeland security threat-based approach. A model of the entire solution mix will be deployed at the Southwest border during the next eight months. Following this initial deployment, additional task orders will be issued focusing on the Southwest border first.
Boeing was slected over other SBInet bidders Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Co., Lockheed Martin and Ericsson Inc.
The Boeing group includes team members DRS Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, Palm Bay, Fla.; Kollsman Inc., Merrimack, N.H.; L-3 Government Services Inc., Washington, D.C.; L-3 Communication Systems - West, Salt Lake City; Perot Systems, Plano, Texas; and Unisys Global Public Sector, Reston, Va.
