Maryland transit deploys intelligent video

The Maryland Transit Administration, the ninth-largest transit system in the country, has unveiled new security technology at the Camden Yards Light Rail and MARC station.

The MTA and the Department of Homeland Security spent 15 months developing a program that integrates intelligent video surveillance software with security cameras.

Like a human security guard, the software monitors changes on rail station platforms that are recorded by the cameras. For example, the software can identify bags, packages or objects that are left unattended. It then notifies transportation authorities.

"Pairing this cutting-edge system with the MTA police professionals on the street means our rails and our riders will be safer," Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich said in a news release.

The MTA plans to use a $12.7 million state and federal grant to install the new systems at metro, MARC and light rail stations throughout Maryland.
